Mi Cocina is one of the good things to have come out of the lockdown of 2020.
The new Mexican food takeaway has popped up in Winchester and I am a BIG fan. The city seriously lacks this type of cuisine. I am always in the mood for Mexican, one of my all time favourite foods. 🇲🇽
📍Now at The Square in Winchester, previously at Bridge Street House.
The food is simply incredible, take a look…

The Mi Cocina Story
Ok, I hope I do this justice, let’s set the scene. It’s the beginning of lockdown Spring 2020 and beautiful Mexican couple, Vee and Roberto are stuck in Winchester.
The couple’s plans to travel across Europe and back to Mexico to settle are cancelled as lockdown takes a grip of the world.
While most would see this as a major blow, and I’m sure initially it was, Vee and Roberto managed to find a silver lining in the chaos.
After not being able to find good Mexican food in Winchester they teamed up with Bridge Street House to create a lock down pop up takeaway restaurant.

Smashing out amazing food, word travelled and soon I found myself scoffing amazing Mexican one Friday night sat on my living room floor. Wing sauce all over my face, I was transported straight back to the streets of Tijuana. Food that reminds you of your travels is a total win in my book.
Word on the street, and by street I mean the lovely chap who served me, is that now Vee and Roberto are going to stay in Winchester. Hooray!
A new venture is on the horizon and the very selfish part of me is super happy that I can regularly go for delicious, authentic Mexican food. Wahoo!
Mi Cocina Menu
The menu is curated and there’s about 10 dishes in total and I actually prefer this. A smaller menu allows food to be done really, really well and, Mi Cocina is no exception. There’s still plenty of choice but not so much choice that it becomes overwhelming.

Dinner
I found picking dinner so hard because I would literally eat everything on the Mi Cocina menu. 😂😂😂 This food is right up my street, and I find Mexican and Thai spice is tasty rather than an uncomfortable heat like Indian.
You’ll have to forgive my pictures, the meal travelled from Winchester to Southampton wrapped up tightly in an insulated bag. I could only take quick snaps because the hunger was real! But, I had to share such a great new discovery when the food is so good. It just means I’ll have to return and get some better snaps very soon. 😉
Note to self – remove the watermelon blanket you put on the floor to sit on before taking photos. 🙈

I shared the Quesadilla de Pollo, half a kilo of Las Alitas and the Dirty Fries. The team kindly put the pico de gallo in a side dish for me, I’m allergic to raw onion but this way my partner Henry could still enjoy it.

The Quesadilla was epic, so delicious and I wish I’d ordered one to myself. It was super crispy on the outside, and it made a satisfying snap when I took a bite.

The inside was the perfect blend of melted cheese, chicken and seasoning. Despite it being deep fried it was not greasy at all and was so moreish that I could have eaten another. 🙈

The coating on the Las Alitas was the perfect BBQ balance between citrus, spice and a sweet finish.
When they said it was slathered in sauce, I was a little cynical, places always say ‘slathered’ and it isn’t. Oh how wrong I was. Oh hello to the sauce ALL over my face and fingers. There is no elegant way to eat the wings so I embraced it and got stuck in. It wasn’t pretty but it was SO good.

The Dirty Fries were just what I wanted, covered in spices, tasty chilli beef, melted cheddar, hot sauce and pico de Gallo.

What a discovery!
I swear I’ve become Mi Cocina’s personal cheerleader. The food was excellent, and I am just so very happy to find take out that’s a bit different, authentic and not a chain. If you live in or near Winchester, support this great venture by ordering yourself some fantastic take out.

My partner, who was surprised when I made him drive quite so far to pick up the take away, even congratulated me on picking such a great meal. And, he promptly asked what’s a sensible time to elapse before we order again from them.
Vee, Roberto, we will be back, we want to try the Halloumi Fries, the Hamburguesa, Tacos and the Esquites next!
Ordering & Current situation
The food ordering process is changing all the time due to the lockdown measures.
