The Street Bakeshop, Old Basing

The Street Bakeshop in Old Basing is a hybrid, half cafe, half bakery and it combines the two elements perfectly.

This is the place to go in Basingstoke for breakfast and to pick up a loaf. Top quality food, baked goods and coffee. Oh, and some rather magnificent cake.

Basingstoke has really lacked this sort of coffee scene and I’m so excited to see a proper independent coffee scene emerge here.

Take a look around…

The Street Bakeshop in Old Basing

Set on a rural Old Basing street, the Bakehouse is at home among the thatched roofs, red bricks and English countryside.

The cafe is a small brick fronted building with a bakery kitchen at the back and to the left of the building.

Inside, there’s probably about eight tables and a further two outside and a deep blue paint on the walls.

It’s well spaced and when you walk in you’re facing a main front counter for coffee, cake and savoury offerings. To your right is a self serve bakery area and to the left of the counter is the seating.

Pretty pin leg tables offset more industrial features and there’s a bright yellow neon Bakehouse light above the counter. It’s a lovely little place for a coffee and snack.

I love a smaller well thought through menu. The Street Bakehouse in Old Basing offers a brilliant curated selection of cakes, loaves and hot sandwiches. These pictures, just so you know, were very hard to get when you’re trying to work around coronavirus safety measures. If they’re a little bit off, or at an angle, you know it’s not artistic licence. It was me working hard to get some shots in a busy cafe environment!

What We Ordered

I went with my Mum for brunch had a couple of Moon Roast flat white coffees and two brisket subs with all the toppings. For once, the sauces and topping didn’t include raw onion, and I made the most of it and had them all!

Moon Roast coffee is great, we often drink this at home and their house blend is very smooth.

The rolls were absolutely exceptional, the meat was incredibly tasty and so were the toppings.

I liked how different they were too, it was refreshing not to go somewhere and be faced with pancakes or avocado on toast! Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just so good to have a different range of options when eating out.

Pear and walnut cake

We topped it off with a slice of lemon drizzle cake and a walnut and pear cake. The portions were a really good size, and the cake was of a really high standard. I don’t usually have cake out, because most of the time I find it a little disappointing but, the cake at The Street Bakeshop was superb.

Having had such an excellent meal we then also picked up a loaf and some cake for at home, which we’ve really enjoyed too.

What a great discovery – another fab Hampshire independent company absolutely smashing cafe culture.

The Street Bakeshop

I’m honestly so impressed with The Street Bakeshop, the food, setting and staff all exceeded my expectations. It was great value for money and I think the team have just got such a sweet little set up here. I’ll definitely be going back for another brisket bun, it was incredible.

I’m so glad Basingstoke has more diversity coming to the coffee and foodie scene. I know The Street Bakehouse is going to be insanely popular because it’s such a great offering and I can’t wait to go back.

If you’re in Basingstoke and want to support a local independent then this absolutely worth a visit. Stick it on your places to visit next list!
