Lunch at The Hut Behind the Hedge

Rock has some great places to eat and The Hut Behind The Hedge is no exception – a great little lunch or snack stop!

In fact, the term ‘hidden gem’ is over used but this is one and not well known out of local circles. If you’re headed to Rock, support local and make sure you order a slice of cake.

Take a look at the bright blue cabin which is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area…

After an active morning followed by a walk from Polzeath to Rock Henry and I had built up quite an appetite. It’s lucky really as a feast was waiting when we reached The Hut Behind The Hedge.

Fresh fruit smoothies are always welcome on a hot day!

The Hut Behind The Hedge

You’ll know you’ve reached the right place as tucked behind a big green hedge is a little hut painted in the brightest blue.

The views across the rolling hills surrounding Padstow on the other side of the river are stunning and you could easily while away a lazy afternoon there. While there’s a couple of picnic benches, in the summer when it’s busy you’ll definitely want to take a picnic blanket and sit in the field soaking up the views and sunshine.

Lunch

There’s a great little lunch menu and really quite diverse for such a small outfit.

There’s all sorts of cakes, sausage rolls and other great British food treats all that have been home made by the owner and they look incredible. It is a feast for the eyes as well as the tummy and I didn’t know what to have as there’s a great selection.

We picked melted cheese paninis and they were incredible. Covered in sesame seeds and stuffed full of filling this was exactly what was needed after an active morning.

I had the classic combination of mozzarella, tomato and basil – it’s a real favourite of mine.

They were so tasty and we sat in the sun taking a break on our holiday eating good food and admiring the view.

Cake

I think we bit off more than we could chew when we also ordered cake and two massive portions were handed over to us! I was very happy we still had a walk home and an active afternoon planned!

Henry and I shared the carrot cake and a piece of banana and chocolate bread. I should have taken a picture of all the other cakes – there was a nice looking date slice, Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, and scones and cream teas to name just a couple I can remember!

The cake is divine. It really is excellent. If you’re going to stop somewhere for tea and cake in Rock you’re not going to get better than this.

Location

It’s not hard to find, if you start with your back to the car park in Rock by the beach and ferry crossing. Head left and walk up past the restaurants and shops and then up the hill past lots of houses.

The Hut Behind The Hedge is behind me and this is the road you walk up to reach it

Within five to ten minutes you’ll see a gap in a hedge on your right and a little sandwich board letting you know you’re in the right place.

The Hut Behind The Hedge also serves decent coffee too! it’s very affordable, you’re supporting a local business and the food is great – it’s a fabulous little place to eat and take a break.

Rock is utterly charming and this addition to the village is such a good one!

Headed to the area? You’re going to want to add The Hut Behind The Hedge to your list of places to visit.
