Autumn discoveries & Happy Halloween 2016

Autumnal weekends rock. Reds and oranges, indicative of the change of season, transform woodland in to fiery landscapes that are picture perfect. Not only do the warm colours look beautiful but the crisp crunches and rustling of  fallen leaves provide the soundtrack to the season. It is one of my favourite times of year.

Picking pumpkins, getting crafty, cosy coffee trips and brunches are some of the best things to do at this time of the year. So this weekend, that’s exactly what I did!

Weekend discoveries in Hampshire…

Tasty treats at Josie’s in Bishops Waltham

This weekend I discovered so many wonderful things on my doorstep. First stop was breakfast at Josie’s in Bishops Waltham. I cannot believe this amazing coffee shop has been so close for so long and I didn’t know about it.

There’s a strong coffee game at Josie’s

Josie’s does a mean stack of pancakes with the requisite crispy bacon and maple syrup and for the more health conscious a lip-smacking breakfast taco with halloumi, avocado, eggs and a killer Mexican sauce. Also on the menu is Monmouth Coffee, my absolute favourite and something I’ve only ever previously been able to get at Borough Market in London. This made my morning, stellar coffee and grub really set you up for a chilly day out and about.

Pancakes and breakfast taco’s at Josie’s – awesome!

Pickwell Farm, near Hamble, seems to be the best spot for pumpkins for as long as I can remember and this year was no different. Unfortunately, I’d missed the chance to pick directly from the fields, next year I must go earlier! But, crates full to the brim of round shiny orange bundles, pulled me in like a magnet. Soon the back of my car looked like a witches store cupboard.

There was also a brief stop at the new Cove restaurant in Shamrock Quay, Southampton. Classic coastal design and a great selection of teas made it a welcome retreat from the cold. They specialise in local seafood, and I’d like to go back and try it out properly as the lunches going out looked delicious.

With the leaves dropping in such glorious colours it seems a shame to watch them rot on the ground. On Pinterest and Instagram I’ve seen a couple of blogs on leaf garlands, recently a friend had given it a go with her children and it looked awesome so I decided to give it a try. It was a lot more fiddly than I thought it would be trying to tie cotton on to the stalks but, the end result is pretty satisfying.  Having some different decorations for Halloween that incorporate the season colours is good too.

My home-made leaf garland!

These are just a few of the things I got up to this weekend to celebrate autumn and Halloween, I hope it provides you with some inspiration or new discoveries in and around Southampton.

What’s your favourite thing to do during autumn and for Halloween? Tonight I’ve got a date carving pumpkins and watching the awesome Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus.

Happy Halloween everyone!

This film gives me all the best Halloween feels!
