This is my very first Hampshire Independent Gift Guide, bringing you a round up of incredible local independent businesses from across the county.
Everything on this guide can be bought online, helping you work around restrictions and get that all important Christmas shopping done. Not even a pandemic can stop the spread of Christmas cheer. I’ve heard it’s spread by singing loud and clear. 😉
Oh yeah, and you’ll be supporting amazing local producers, creators and makers keeping creativity and retail diversity alive in Hampshire.
It’s really powerful that your Christmas shopping can also help your local community…

If Compass Candles doesn’t have the bottle you’d like you can even get them to make you a custom order from one you already have. They’ve even started making wax melts too, which could make a nice little stocking filler.
Order via Instagram DM’s for stylish hand poured soy candles from Winchester. Lazy Sunday and Gingerbread sounds right up my street, and Wild Lavender, Pure Coconut and Cinnamon Orange…ok, so I like the sound of a lot of these!
These will definitely be on my gift list and I think I’m going to have to order a couple of my home too.
Candles from Chandlers Ford local Claire are sure to be a hit whoever you choose to give them to. The metallic three wicks candles are so pretty and will bring a soft glow to any space.
The tea light making kits would be a nice project to gift someone too, and contain everything you need to try your hand at candle making.
These Winchester candlemakers are multitalented as they also have an incredible hair salon in the centre of the city.

I first discovered them at a Christmas market a couple of years ago and have loved their clothes ever since. With solid collections for men and women, don’t forget to look at the accessories too.
Strong Island Clothing Co is a beloved Portsmouth brand with a focus on clothing but also sells other local food, drink, art and accessories.
There’s a big selection of products to pick from that expands beyond clothing.
Hampshire is full of wonderful experiences, days out and things to do. While the current situation doesn’t allow them to be enjoyed in their normal way to their fullest potential, there’s still plenty of joy to be found.
This could not be contained in this post, and was an earlier release in my gift guide series. There’s just so many things and it would have been a shame not to do them justice!
An experience is always a thoughtful gift, and it encourages your friends and family to get planning for when life’s a little less restricted. While most of these are not open in a full lockdown, they respond quickly when restrictions are lifted.
I’ve included things that require a membership, one off tickets and things that are free to cater for all budgets.
Obviously with all the experiences on this list, please do check what’s open and can be booked. Some of these experiences might be ones you can promise a visit in the future to. And, it gives something that you and the person you’re gifting to, an experience to look forward to together.
HAMPSHIRE HOMES & LIFESTYLE
Local lifestyle shop Alresford Linen offers a range of items from clothes to beautiful home items and a range of make up bags, purses and bags that can be personalised with beautiful embossing.
While the majority of items aren’t locally produced, some of the brands stocked support other local businesses from across the south coast and beyond. The bags that can be embossed are from a maker in Salcombe.
Leather bunting with all kinds of messaging made by Heather! She also makes a few other things which you can find on her Etsy page. The rainbow hearts that dangle are particularly sweet and so is the snowflake garland.
The pictures above don’t really do her justice, there’s so much on her shop, so do take a look.
The Long Barn’s online shop is now live and full of gifts and decorations that can be ordered online. Shop from the larder, the many scented collections and of course, the famous lavender.

This local independent Southsea market place has an online offering too. Beautiful art prints, photography, mugs and more with designs to suit every household.
There’s lots of Portsmouth related art and photography which highlight the unique things in the city. I think it makes the Love Southsea brand really special as it captures a unique part of Portsmouth and Hampshire life.
My personal favourite is the Squinny series, I’ve said squinny for as long as I can remember and I didn’t know it was a word that originated in Hampshire.
The new art prints that have just been released are less Southsea focused and have fun quotes and slogans on them too.
From sleep well gift sets to jewellery to plant pots to clothing… I could see going and going. The Bee Hive Portsmouth is an online department stores stocking and supporting amazing local creators.

FAMILY & CHILDREN
I’m not sure about you but I’m now at the stage where most of my friends have children of varying ages. These independent local businesses should steer you in the right direction.
If you’re looking for an alternative to Elf on the Shelf, grab a Nigel or Nigella from new venture KANDL Crafts based in Lymington. These kits come with everything you need to make a Nordic Gnome and make the festive season extra special this year. A bit of fun if you’re into your crafts and once complete one for the kids to enjoy in the run up to Christmas.
If your friends have small children, this Winchester maker has some very cute hand made clothes, bibs and head bands amongst other things that make a great gift.
This family run business has two shops in Alresford and Bishops Waltham and can also be bought from online. There’s toys to suit a range of ages and pockets. You can pick by age and category which is very useful and be sure to check out the extensive Christmas stocking filler section.
FOOD & DRINK
Food and drink gifts is a whole category within itself. So much so, that I had to write an entirely separate guide to the lovely local foodie treats in Hampshire.
I’m quite picky so my guide to the best gifts from the county’s local producers is a tried and tested one. And, by that, I’ve consumed everything on the list and curated my favourite things that I think other people would appreciate too.
I’ve also made sure that the majority of treats will actually last and make it until Christmas, so there’s only a couple of perishables. These can be ordered with Christmas in mind but best chat to the producer directly to find out, or seek guidance from their website.
I will however, make a couple of exceptions and add a few more in here because I can’t help myself! I’ve not tried these but, they look brilliant.
These beautiful looking fancy chocolates are made by local Southampton Chocolatier Charlotte. She’s recently started her business and has created some big chocolate boxes just in time for Christmas.
If you always pepper your Christmas stockings with traditional sweets (and if you don’t, why not?!) then I have a local shop for you.
The Sweet Treat Company in Winchester offer all your pick and mix retro favourites in so many different combinations.
One of their best functions is that you can actually choose your pick and mix. You can pick only the sweets you or the person you gift it to loves!
OTHER HAMPSHIRE DIRECTORIES
A couple of these are already featured in this guide but, there’s so many why repeat it when there’s an excellent directory in existence!
This is a whole festive directory of gifts from independent makers in Southampton via Etsy. There’s everything from art, gifts, textiles, homeware, jewellery and things for children.
And, there’s a Southampton Makers Gift Guide too.
Well isn’t Portsmouth City Council awesome? They’ve put together this amazing directory to support local Portsmouth independent businesses
In a handy A-Z format you’ll find such a large range of amazing Portsmouth creators to shop from. Easily laid out with all the links you need to shop the high street from the comfort of your living room.
The We Create Market run by Portsmouth Creates is a new market venture to support local creators. An excellent local initiative unfortunately hampered by lockdown.
But, the brilliant team have put all the local exhibitors into a directory online which you can search and look at the brands that interest you. Most have their own websites to purchase from too so you can safely purchase from the comfort of your own home.
