Flour is rarer than gold dust. Even Attenborough is impressed when he spies the lesser spotted bread flour.

It took me three weeks to get one bag of flour and it was the last one on the shelf.

That’s when it hit me, I need to go direct to the source.

I don’t know about you but see as I can’t travel I’m sure as hell going to get my bake on. Hello carby comfort. Turns out the UK has a lot of mills. I mean, more than I ever realised.

I’ve listed as many UK flour mills as I could find and whether they…

Eling Tide Mill

• Temporarily closed and not producing flour
• One of the few tide mills in the world still producing flour
• Normally the mill is open to the public, but milling is dependent on the tide so check with the mill before visiting if you want to see it in operation – check the website to see when it will reopen
• Three types of flour are milled

Ford End Watermill

Ford End Watermill, Station Road, Ivinghoe, Bucks LU7 9EA

• Temporarily closed BUT still producing flour for local collection or delivery only
• Visit the Facebook Page and send them a private message to place an order
• The mill has been restored by members of the Pitstone Local History Society
• Normally it is open for regular demonstrations and to sell flour

FWP Matthews Ltd

Cotswold Mill, Station Road, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Chipping Norton OX7 6BH

• Online shop is still open and delivering UK wide
• The online shop will be selling various sizes of flour, this changes regularly so check the website to see what’s available
• The current order processing time is 7 to 10 working days
• The mill produces a range of flours using grain that is sourced locally

Leckford Estate

• The Longstock Farm Shop is open and offering free local delivery during COVID 19
• The free local produce delivery service is available to residents in Longstock, Leckford, Fullerton and Houghton Villages and will be available until the end of May 2020- check the website for updates
• A minimum order value of £20 applies to all orders

• Leckford isn’t exactly a mill but they are producing flour so thought it was worth including

Lurgashall Mill

• Not currently selling flour online or on Facebook
• Run as a part of the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, which is temporarily closed
• The watermill has been completely restored and normally produces stoneground wholemeal flour

Mapledurham Mill

Mapledurham, Reading, Oxfordshire RG4 7TS

• Temporary closed and not producing flour
• The only flour producing watermill on the Thames
• Normally various flours can be bought from the mill shop, check the website for hours

Wessex Mill

Mill Street, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 9AB

• Delivers across the UK except the highlands and islands
• The mill shop is open too, times vary day to day so message them on Facebook to see if they are open
• Still selling online but dealing with a high level of orders – check regularly for updates on the website
• The mill is very responsive on it’s Facebook Page
• Roller milling locally grown wheat to produce flour. Normally appointments can be made to tour the mill 

Winchester City Mill

Bridge Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9BH

• This National Trust site is currently closed and not producing flour
• Keep an eye on the website to see updates regarding reopening
• This mill is conveniently in the centre of Winchester City Centre and it only makes small amounts of flour but is worth checking once it has reopened
• I’ve bought flour from here before and it was very good, aren’t we lucky to have so many great UK flour mills!

Alderholt Mill

Sandleheath Road, Alderholt, Fordingbridge, Hampshire SP6 1PU

• Sells flour through its mill shop but not online
• My recommendation would be to call before visiting to ensure flour is in stock
• It’s a working watermill with a B&B and self-catering accommodation

Burcott Mill

Wells Road, Wookey, Wells, Somerset BA5 1NJ

• Appears to still be open for purchase of flour from the mill shop, but I’d call in advance to check availability
• No online shop
• Open daily for flour sales, when visitors are welcome to look around the watermill
• The flour is available through certain farm shops in Somerset

Clyston Mill

Broadclyst, Exeter, Devon EX5 3EW

• Temporarily closed and not producing flour
• A National Trust site, the watermill uses locally grown wheat to make flour and bread for the tea room
• Stoneground flour is sold in the shop at the mill and at Killerton’s shop

Cricklepit Mill

Commercial Road, Exeter, Devon EX2 4AB

• No online shop and only hosts specific milling visitor days – none planned at present
• Run by Devon Wildlife Trust
• Normally flour milling at the watermill takes place on the second Friday of each month
• Flour can be bought at the mill when it’s open

Dunster Water Mill

Dunster Castle, Dunster, near Minehead, Somerset, TA24 6RL

• Temporarily closed and not producing flour
• No online shop, normally the mill shops sells flour
• The mill was built in 1680 and it has a museum housing a collection of ancient agricultural machinery which is open to the public

Hele Mill

Corn Mill Close, Ilfracombe, Devon EX34 9QY

• Temporarily closed, no online shop
• Updates on reopening will be posted regularly on the Facebook Page
• Tours of the watermill are available, see website for opening times.  Stoneground whole grain flour is sold in the gift shop.

Otterton Mill

Fore Street, Otterton, Budleigh Salterton, Devon EX9 7HG

• Shop open, local collection services but no online shop
• The Farm Shop and Bakery is now open 10am to 3pm Wednesday through to Sunday (closed on a Monday & Tuesday). 
• Next Day Collection Services: They offer a next day collection service between 3pm and 4pm when open.
• Orders need to be placed the previous day by 3pm by calling 01395 568031
• Please leave a contact name and number if they are busy
• Social distancing, hand and basket sanitising stations and screens are in place and we will operate with a maximum of two customers inside the store only
• For the most recent updates check the Facebook Page for more information
• A watermill producing stoneground flours that are used in the artisan bakery on site, and sold through the shop
• Normally the mill is open to the public

Sharpham Park

Street, Somerset BA16 9SA

• Online shop open and delivering across the UK
• Only sells spelt flours
• Does not appear to have a mill shop for local collection and no call and collect service offered
• Stocks locally and at sister company Kilver Court Designer Village, Somerset
• The farm at Sharpham Park grows and mills spelt, producing a range of flours

Shipton Mill

Long Newnton, Tetbury, Gloucestershire GL8 8RP

• Online shop open and delivering across the UK
• Due to high demand to order you must first register for an ordering slot
• When allocated a slot, you have 24 hours to make an order
• Please allow seven days for the order to be dispatched due to high demand
• Selling directly from the mill shop is temporarily suspended so they can focus on online orders
• An amazing selection of different flours is available, and I’m waiting on a big flour order from them which I’m very excited about
• The stones are now turned by electricity for a more consistent power source but it was once a water-driven mill

Stanway Watermill

Stanway, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL54 5PQ

• No updates on opening times or flour availability on the website or its Twitter or Facebook account during COVID 19
• No online shop
• Normally the mill is open to the public on one or two days of the week

Stoate and Sons

• Online shop and delivering across the UK
• No call and collect offered, mill not open to the public
• Orders will take 10-14 days
• Offers three different flours in a good range of different sizes
• Also stocks local businesses across the region

Sturminster Newton Mill

• Working tourist attraction
• During the pandemic the mill is back in production to help meet demand, read the recent Bournemouth Echo news article
• I’ve looked and think the flour can only be bought from the mill on a collection basis as there’s no online options
• Try calling on 01258 473 760 – I’ve not managed to get through but I’ll keep trying and update this if I find out
• Normally the mill is open to the public, with guided tours available

The Town Mill

Mil Lane, Lyme Regis, Dorset DT7 3PU

• Flour can be purchased directly from the mill shop
• It is only supplying residents of the local community and each order is limited to three bags per person
• No call and collect or online service offered
• Normally this watermill is open and it has an art gallery and a café on site

Wilton Mill

Near Marlborough Wiltshire SN8 3SW

• Temporarily closed and not producing flour
• Normally the windmill is run by volunteers and is open from Easter Saturday to the end of September on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 2pm to 5pm
• Stoneground flour is sold at the mill and it stocks local shops

Denver Mills

• Temporarily closed
• I can’t actually find out if the mill is still producing flour, the family that previously ran it has changed its business and it doesn’t look like anyone’s continuing with the traditional practice of making flour here.

Fosters Mill at Swaffham Prior

Mill Hill, Swaffham Prior, Cambridge CB25 0JZ

• Temporarily close BUT still producing flour
• The mill shop is open on Thursday mornings from 9am to 1pm and on the second Sunday of each month from 2pm to 5pm
• Online services have to be switched on and off to keep up with demand so it’s worth checking regularly

Houghton Mill

• A National Trust property with tea room and shop

Letheringsett Watermill

• This is Norfolk’s only flour producing watermill

Lode Mill

• The watermill stands in the grounds of Anglesey Abbey, a National Trust property

Marriage’s

Chelmer Mills, New Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1PN

• The online store is re-stocked most days with a limited selection of 16kg sacks only
• Delivers across the UK courtesy of DHL
• No click and collect currently offered
• Orders are strictly one 16kg sack per product, per person
• 7-21 days for delivery
• Prices are only visible when you’re able to purchase the flour
• During this time prices cannot be provided by e-mail or over the phone. As an example, a 16kg sack of Manitoba is £18.49 and Culinary Plain and Self Raising are £13.49
• Does not sell yeast but has recipes for bread with our yeast and sourdough starters

Maple Farm Kelsale

• Open every day 9am-6pm, one person in at a time, please use had sanitiser

Mill Green Mill

Stotfold Watermill

• I’ve emailed and unfortunately they can’t sell to the public at the moment but it’s worth keeping an eye on the webpage and Facebook Page
• The lovely Ray has been milling round the clock to keep Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire stocked with flour
• Flour is milled from locally grown ‘Gallant’ wheat, good for making bread with

Wicken Corn Windmill

• Sells online, updates stocks daily
• Offers Click and Collect service
• Promotes environmentally friendly packaging
• Prioritising regular customers during COVID 19
• It also has an eco shop, sells muesli, cereal and has a refillable station.

Cogglesford Mill

• The watermill is temporarily closed
• Not currently offering an online service or click and collect
• Normally you can visit and it has a restaurant and coffee shop, it’s run by volunteers and the council
• Main website is currently down

Ellis Mill

• Temporarily closed
• Not currently offering an online service or click and collect
• Managed by Lincolnshire County Council
• Run by volunteers
• Normally it’s open to the public at weekends
• It’s the last working windmill in Lincoln, built in 1798

Green’s Mill

• Temporarily closed but still producing flour
• Fulfilling local flour demand, call and collect online, no delivery service at present

• No online ordering service
• Maximum amount of white and white spelt per order is 3kg, and maximum amount of all other varieties of flour per order is 6kg.
• The windmill and adjacent science centre are open to the public and the mill has a shop

Heage Windmill

• Normally the mill is open for guided tours on weekends and bank holidays, always check the website

Heckington Windmill

• The only surviving eight sailed windmill in the country
• Normally the mill, tea room and brewery shop are open to the public, check the website for reopening plans and hours

Maud Foster Mill

16 Willoughby Road, Boston, Lincs PE21 9EG

• Temporarily closed but still producing flour
• Please phone 01205 352188 in advance to make a call and collect order
• No online ordering service available
• Flour is sold in 500g, 1Kg, 1.5Kg and 6Kg bags
• 16kg and 32Kg sacks of flour can be ordered for collection from the mill
• To avoid disappointment check that items are in stock before making a special journey
• A windmill with electrically powered stones that can be used when there is no wind
• Built in 1819, the mill underwent major renovations in the late 1980s

Mount Pleasant Windmill

• A traditional four-sailed windmill built in 1875

North Leverton Windmill

Sibsey Trader Windmill

• Built in 1877 to replace an earlier mill on the site
• One of the last six-sailed UK flour mills remaining in England and is an English Heritage site

Stainsby Mill

• Temporarily close, no online or click and collect services available confirmed by the Mill’s Facebook Page
• The watermill is part of the Hardwick Estate and is a National Trust Property

The Five Sailed Windmill

32 East Street, Alford, Lincs LN13 9EH

• I’m struggling to find out if it’s still producing flour – the website hasn’t been updated and the last relevant post on Facebook was in 2018
• Let me know if you know any information to the contrary
• Built in 1837, the mill has five sails due to efficiency experiments
• This mill has a gas-driven engine, allowing it to continue working when there is no wind

Tuxford Mill

• Offering a email/call and collect service

• Please only call if you don’t have email the team is small and it’s easier for them to process emails, call 01777 871 202
• Normally there are guided tours of the mill, baking classes and a shop but all are temporarily closed

Whissendine Windmill

• I had to do some detective work via the Facebook Page
• I messaged them and they let me know that…
  • People can purchase flour from the mill it self. For slightly larger orders they deliver in and around the leicester/ Rutland/ Northampton area or they can use a courier to deliver. They are stocking a lot of local outlets i.e. farm shops etc. But in this instance they would advise people to ring Nigel first on 01664 474172 or leave a message on our website first for information or availability.

Bunbury Mill

• The restored water mill is set in two acres of wildlife rich countryside
• Run by a village trust, this UK flour mill produces stoneground flour which is sold through the visitor centre.  Tours of the mill are available and the grounds are open to the public.

Caudwell’s Mill

158 Bakewell Road, Rowsley, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 2EB

• The mill is temporarily closed but the mill shop is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 10.30am – 3pm
• Online orders are due to recommence shortly, check the Shop Webpage for the latest updates and details
• Caudwell’s Mill switched to water turbine power from a traditional watermill when the rollers were installed for milling the flour
• This mill produces over 25 types of flour

Little Salkeld Watermill

• Online orders only – enquire for Scottish Highlands and Ireland delivery days and prices
• Orders placed will be delivered ASAP, at the moment please allow 2-3 weeks, when deliveries are picked up they are delivered the next working day

Walk Mill

Castleford Heritage Trust

• Founded in 2000 it moved into Queen’s Mill in 2013
• This mill is the base for Castleford Heritage Trust
• A team of volunteers mill flour from fields around Selby
• The flour is on sale at local farm shops and the on-site tearoom

Crakehall Watermill

• Purchase direct from the mill only
• Please contact in advance to order and to be sure there is someone available to serve you

Talgarth Mill

• Open for take-away and collection only
• No online shop or mail order flour deliveries
• Revised Opening Hours: Tuesday to Friday 10am – 2pm, and Saturday 9.30am – 2pm
