Dinner at Bristol’s Honest Burger

A little of what you fancy does you good, and sometimes only a burger will itch that particular food scratch.

I’ve heard so much hype about Honest Burgers and I wanted to try it for so long that when I saw one on a trip to Bristol I knew that would be my spot for dinner. I wanted to try it to see what the fuss was about.

The Bristol branch is on Clare Street, just off Corn Street which is fairly central in the city.

This was my first time at Honest Burgers, take a look at my experience and what I thought, it’s a bit of a mixed bag…

A lovely interior and friendly staff, I really liked how the space had been designed, it fit lots of people but didn’t feel cramped.

I sat looking out the window and did some people watching while I picked a burger from the menu. I don’t know about you but I struggle to eat alone, I had forgotten my usual tools, they come in the form of a book, my laptop or my notepad. My next best option was to plonk myself in a seat with a window view so I could people watch.

This is the first time I tried Honest Burger and to be honest I didn’t know what to expect, I’ve heard a lot of people raving about the burgers.

I picked the special the ‘Buffalo Chicken’ a piece of free-range buttermilk fried chicken with smoked bacon topped with homemade buffalo sauce with Frank’s RedHot Original, blue cheese mayo, lettuce and pickles.

The chicken was tasty and not dry but it could have done with a bit more lettuce and a lot more of the delicious sauce. The burger itself was a huge piece of fried chicken and for a hungry person that hadn’t had any lunch was a very welcome arrival after a long day. On reflection, I should have just asked for more sauce!

I never thought I’d say this but I didn’t really like the chips, they didn’t seem fresh. Again, on reflection, I should have voiced my concerns at the table during the meal so it could have been addressed. But, like I said, I’d had a really long day and was desperate to return to my hotel to get some sleep ahead of another big day.

To be honest, I’m not sure I’ve fully decided what I think of Honest Burgers, I liked the burger selection and I saw some mega burgers going out to tables.  I’m definitely going to try it again as I think, for me, I didn’t pick the right thing, I should have gone for a classic burger! It’s always good to give places a try a few times if you’re not sure what you think.

I’d also like to try the ‘local’ which is different at every location and uses ingredients synonymous with the area or sourced from nearby.

In Bristol, the ‘local’ burger is a beef burger topped with Westcombe smoked cheddar and cheese curds, shoestring fries, Pilton cider and bacon gravy, white onion and pickles with homemade rosemary chips.

Have you tried Honest Burger? I’d love to know what you think and your own experiences.
