My aversion to early mornings is nothing new. For me, there is no catching of the worm, I like my bed, I love sleep and lazy mornings are the best!

Over time I’ve learnt that there things I can do to lessen the impact of the inevitable alarm clock’s call. For me, early morning starts are remedied by coffee, sunshine and hot toasted banana bread.

On a recent work trip, an early start lead to the discovery of an excellent coffee spot in the heart of South Somerset’s Yeovil called Finca.

Location and interior

Yeovil is a cosy country town with two pedestrianised main streets making up the high street. It’s not massive but there’s a couple of foodie places that caught my eye, hidden between the churches and retailers.

This wooden clad gem sits at the top of the high street in front of the town clock and in full view of the morning sun. I arrived just as it opened and before the hustle and bustle of peoples morning commute had begun.

I love that hour just before people head to work, it’s quiet and it’s like the whole street is slowly waking up. It’s always peaceful and you get your pick of seats, which means you can get one in the best position for people watching.

Inside the walls are wood lined, there’s coffee sacks hanging from the walls and cute pillows hung from copper piping to form a backrest for the seating area.

Current blends of coffee are scribbled on a roll of brown paper that hangs off the wall and there are stands with rows displaying the cakes of the day.

The Menu

Finca has a lovely selection of coffees, teas and cold drinks that sits nicely alongside a small food menu. Sometime a small concise food offering is just the right tone, this isn’t a place you’ve go for a massive meal, it’s a quick breakfast and lunch spot.

It’s refreshing, it knows what it is and doesn’t try to complicate things – there’s a couple of vegetarian options and various milk options for those requiring something a little different.

All of the coffee is hand roasted by its roasters in Dorchester near to its sister cafe, Finca in Dochester. I love a place that sells the beans so if you like the blend you can grab some to take home. I wish I’d seen these beans but only noticed them in my photograph below – typical!

The cakes looked delicious there were all kinds from brownies to tiffin-looking rocky roads with chocolate toppings. I mean look at them…😍😍😍

A friendly greeting and a quick peruse of the menu later and a flat white and toasted banana bread with peanut butter arrived at my table.

I haven’t had good banana bread in ages and this was spectacular! The coffee was great, the banana bread was awesome and sitting in the sun, fuelling up was a brilliant way to start the day.

It’s really, really cute and a place that if you lived locally you’d make this your regular coffee haunt. There’s been a real surge in these kind of coffee places, a development and growth of our coffee culture across the UK, and I am really pleased about it. Chain cafes have dominated our coffee scene for far too long.

I swear, I’d be addicted to that banana bread it was so, so good.

Finca will easily be my first port of call when heading to Yeovil in future. Coffee brings me so much joy and I love how it helped me find the joy in an early morning and set me up for a busy day at work. Finca, I will be back!
