An evening at Bill’s for Southampton’s Foodie Fortnight

AD | It’s a deal, it’s a steal, it’s the foodie sale of the century! Go! Southampton has encouraged all of your favourite Southampton restaurants to come together and put on special meal deals for two weeks only.

#FoodieFortnight‘, as it’s been dubbed by the city’s tourist information guide, starts from Monday 23 September 2019 and lasts for, you guessed it, two weeks!

I headed to Bill’s to try out the special menu and the offer it has put on for the two weeks, take a look at what two courses for £15 will put on your table…

Lots of other restaurants are also taking part in #FoodieFortnight and it was really kind of Bill’s to extend an invitation to me. I joined a lovely group of Southampton Bloggers for a fun evening of food and drink – it was so relaxing!

What’s the deal?

#FoodieFortnight is happening across a selection of Southampton restaurants from 23 September to 6 October 2019. It’s at high end venues like The Jetty to community cafes like The Art House and lots of other restaurants have joined in too.

All participating venues are offering different deals, Bill’s for example is offering a special set menu.

Two courses for £15 or three courses for £18…

Look at that face – it bloody loves a deal!

…which is great value and means you can afford to treat yourself a little more frequently than normal!

Bill’s Restaurant

Bill’s has undergone a transformation, it’s just re-opened and looks stunning. It’s layers of teal, velvet, indoor plants and trinkets stacked up to look beautifully eclectic and welcoming.

Along with individual tables there’s also higher seating, booths and a gorgeous outside area that’s adorned with soft fairy lights.

Our table was tucked around from the front door, in a little side section that was away from the rest of the main restaurant with a beautiful view out across the Southampton Old Walls (which by the way are now lit up and look gorgeous!).

Top Foodie Picks

On the special set menu for Foodie Fortnight at Bill’s there were lots of options with a selection of meals that would please meat eaters and vegetarians. I didn’t see anything vegan but that’s not to say there wasn’t anything vegan, I just wasn’t looking out for it!

For my starter I picked something I haven’t had for ages, crispy calamari with red chilli and lime aioli, which was a real treat. It was REALLY crispy too, and a big starter, which I was thankful for after a long day at work.

For my main I went for the minute steak with garlic butter, frites and pea shoots – oh damn, is this a piece of me. The thin steak (cooked medium FYI) is a great cut of meat that’s really tender and tasty when cooked right. My knife sliced through it like butter and melted in the mouth so it was done just right for me!

I’ve never thought of adding pea shoots to a steak, and I’ll definitely be doing this at home in the future – it’s such a nice addition.

Main – Burger of the week – a chicken burger with garlic and turmeric

There were so many other lovely meals that arrived at the table, that I couldn’t resist taking a few snaps to show you…

Main – The sea bass and new potatoes
Starter – Chicken and sesame dumplings
Main – Daily Special – Salmon!
Starter – Rosemary, pea hummus on garlic sourdough

They also have some great veggie options…

Vegetable Wellington!

Cocktails

Drinks aren’t included in the #FoodieFortnight deals but we had a couple of cocktails because life’s short and cocktails are GREAT!

I had the Pineapple Somerset Sour Rocks, Somerset apple brandy, pineapple, lemon and Mediterranean rosemary.

I’m clearly super happy with my cocktail choice!

Here’s a couple of the others that our group had – they all went down very well!

Rhubarb Rossini- Strawberry puree & rhubarb liqueur, finished with Prosecco
Rose Sangria – Rosé wine, peach & raspberry, topped with Prosecco
Watermelon Margarita
The non-alcoholic Skinny Colada – my favourite!

Thoughts on #FoodieFortnight

I really love the idea of a foodie fortnight and restaurants putting on offers that are affordable, especially when our hard earned pennies don’t stretch as far as they used to.

I’d love to eat out more frequently and these two weeks are going to help me to just that! I also think it’s incredible that Visit Southampton has pulled together so many awesome venues in the city to participate.

I’ll be heading back to Bill’s and seeing if I can squeeze in a couple of other places during next two weeks and

    1. Ha ha – well it’s true! A lovely chain restaurant to go to, much prefer it to some of the others out there. Always had a good meal and it’s got a gorgeous outside bit that overlooks the beautiful Southampton Old Walls! 🙂
